A SHORE THING

Since it’s almost Back To School time, I'm giving a quiz!

Is there anything you can think of that is better than owning a cottage?

(Yes, it’s a trick question.) Owning two cottages is the correct answer!

Yesterday, I finished another chapter about a Delaware couple who own twin cottages.

Janet and Don live in one cottage and Janet uses the second one (located across a courtyard garden) as her office and shop.

You’ve already seen the family’s sunroom. It’s the banner photo of my blog (see above). Don't you love how she mixes warm sandy colors?

Don and Janet firmly believe in maintaining the architectural integrity of their home -- and neighborhood. While they could have built a bigger addition, they chose one that enclosed the existing porch and only slightly enlarged the cottage’s footprint.

The new sunroom looks like it was always part of the dwelling -- a tribute to their builder’s skills, as well as the couple’s restraint.

Janet has filled every room in the cottage with charming beachy touches and nostalgic collectibles. I’d love to post all the rest of the photos from this cottage but I’m afraid you’ll have to wait for the book to come out to see more.

*** BLOG DU JOUR ***

Laure lives in Venice, California and has a great eye for design. I started reading her blog AtHomeAtHome when I was looking for a cottage to shoot in the Venice area. My son moved to Venice beach in July and I was looking for an excuse to go visit him! Thanks to Laure I’ve found great places to shop –and eat—in the area. Alas, I never found a cottage to include in the book! Don’t miss her ‘Pink is ALWAYS a good choiceposting. It includes a neat trick on how to serve watermelon.
